In The Vase.
Follow the tips and advice below to help your newly delivered flowers to last longer.
Ensure your vase is clean. Wash vases thoroughly with detergent and a dedicated washing up brush. Rinse thoroughly with clean water then fill to a level of around 2/3 with water.
Dissolve the flower food into the water before placing the flowers in the vase. As well as feeding the flowers, this will also help to keep the water clean since it contains an anti-bacterial treatment.
You now need to let the water in the vase settle. Put the vase to one side and leave it for a while in order to allow any air bubbles to escape and the water to reach room temperature. If air bubbles get trapped in the stem of your flowers they will prevent your flowers from drinking, and flowers take in warm water more efficiently than cold water.
In order to avoid debris building up in the vase ensure you remove any leaves and foliage that will sit below the waterline.
If you have some roses, you may notice that some of the outer petals are discoloured. These are guard petals and they are there to protect the inner petals. They can be very carefully removed.
Every couple of days check the water level and top up if necessary.
Every two to four days change the water and re-cut the base of the stems. re-cutting just a little bit off the bottom of the stems each time
In order to keep the arrangement looking fresh for longer remove any dead or dying flowers from the vase.
Make sure you position your vase of flowers in a cooler spot in the room away from fires and radiators and out of direct sunlight. This will prolong the life of your flowers. Also make sure you keep your cut flowers away from any fruit or vegetables in the rooms because when fruit ripens it releases ethylene gas which poisons cut flowers and causes wilting and browning.
Avoid Old Wife’s Tales
There are a lot of old wife’s tales about how to make your flowers last longer such as adding vodka, aspirin, a penny or lemonade to the water in your vase. These tips don’t work and they will most likely reduce the life of your cut flowers rather than increasing it.
As an example lemonade will provide sugar that cut flowers require for energy, but without any bleach, this will enable bacteria to also thrive on this sugar. Also Lemonade contains a lot of bubbles which can get stuck in the stems of your flowers very easily and prevent them from drinking.
